Questions about D Add9 (Dadd9)

What notes are in a D Add9 (Dadd9) chord?

A D Add9 (Dadd9) chord contains the notes D, F#, A, E. It is built from the added 9th formula 1 - 3 - 5 - 9, with D as the root.

Why does Dadd9 keep the third when some open shapes drop it?

The 3rd (F♯) is what makes a chord major rather than suspended. A common open shape voiced x-x-0-2-3-0 leaves the F♯ out, which technically produces a Dsus2, not a Dadd9. This voicing frets the F♯ deliberately so the chord contains a real major third alongside the added 9th (E).
